The Alberta EV Rebate: Does Toyota Qualify?

The Alberta EV Rebate: Does Toyota Qualify?

More Albertans are getting electric vehicles, but are not aware they could qualify for an Alberta Electric Vehicle (EV) Rebate… earning as much as $5,000 per electric vehicle!

Canada is pushing forward with environmental policy changes and electric vehicles stand to benefit from one of these policies. This blog post will help you understand your Alberta EV rebate options. Similarly, we'll compare your options to other provinces, and your eco-friendly vehicle choices at West Edmonton Mall Toyota.

Canada’s Federal iZEV Program

The federal government runs an electric vehicle (EV) incentive program called iZEV, standing for Incentives for Zero-Emission Vehicles. Available Canada-wide, this program offers incentives to individuals wanting to purchase eligible electric or low-emission vehicles.

The iZEV program can offer up to a maximum of $5,000 per qualifying vehicle, with some terms and conditions that apply. (One of these is that individual Canadians are only eligible for one incentive per calendar year!)

How Do I Qualify for This Alberta EV Rebate?

To qualify for the iZEV discount, purchase a brand-new, qualifying zero-emission vehicle from a participating dealership.

What is a zero-emission vehicle (ZEV)?

Any vehicle with the potential to produce zero tailpipe emissions, such as:

  • Fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEV)
  • Plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEV)
  • Battery electric vehicles (BEV)

An example of each of these zero-emission vehicles would be:

  • FCEV: The Toyota Mirai
  • PHEV: The Toyota Prius Prime or the Toyota RAV4 Prime
  • BEV: The Toyota bZ4X

How Does The Alberta EV Rebate Work?

Once your eligibility has been confirmed, an enrolled dealership can apply your incentive to your new electric vehicle at the point of sale.

Step One: Complete the Consumer Consent Form

This is part of the eligibility verification process.

Step Two: Complete the Incentive Received Form

Complete this form once your eligibility has been confirmed. Your incentive will then directly appear on the bill of sale or lease agreement.

Step Three: The Dealership Will Submit the Documentation

Our team at West Edmonton Mall Toyota will submit all documentation required to be reimbursed.

Here are a few important things to remember when claiming this EV rebate:

  • The dealership must apply taxes or fees before applying the incentive.
  • You are not required to make a deposit to receive the incentive.
  • The incentive should appear directly on your bill of sale or lease agreement, and not arrive later or delayed.

Canada’s Federal iMHZEV Program

The Canadian government also runs an incentive program for Medium- and Heavy-Duty Zero-Emission Vehicles (iMHZEV). This is to encourage Canadian businesses to purchase larger electric vehicles!

Businesses can receive up to 10 incentives per calendar year, with benefits ranging from $10,000 to $200,000 per vehicle.

The Alberta EV Rebate

While many provinces in Canada offer provincial EV rebates, Alberta is not one of them. So what is available to you?

The Federal iZEV program can greatly assist in purchasing vehicles with higher up-front costs. Keep reading to see what else is available to Albertan drivers.

Utility Provider Incentives

FortisAlberta, an Albertan electricity service provider, has joined forces with Optiwatt for the EV Smart Charging Pilot program. Therefore FortisAlberta customers can sign up for this pilot program through Optiwatt. It's a free app that uses your utility plan and electricity rates to determine the cheapest possible times to charge.

What can you gain?

Not only can you save money by using Optiwatt’s algorithm, but they are also offering $150 in rewards for joining the pilot program.
